FAQs

What sort of camera do you use?

I use a Fuji Finepix F30 for just about all my photos, but I am also experimenting with a Nikon D80.

How do you take your photographs?

I point and shoot. I don’t fiddle endlessly with settings because once the Fuji Finepix is set up, I leave it at that. I only ever shoot in natural light and never use the flash. I don’t like direct sunlight and sometimes use a large piece of watercolour paper to reduce its effect. Once the photos are on my computer, the only changes I make are when I crop them. I don’t alter the colours, brightness or anything else. So what you see is what I see.

Can I use your photos on my blog/website/poster/dissertation/thesis/project?

Normally the answer is no.

What advice do you have for someone thinking of starting a blog?

Firstly, use a good server. I recommend TypePad; even though it’s not free it’s worth every cent and it’s easy to use. Decide what it is you want to say and how you want to say it. Try taking photos of whatever it is you plan to write about. Then just have a go. And enjoy.

Can you answer specific quilting/knitting/crochet/gardening questions?

No, I’m sorry I can’t do this.

Where can I find the pattern for the crochet flowers squares you show on yarnstorm?

I haven’t yet got round to writing this out. I may do so one day.

How do you quilt your quilts?

I hand-quilt them using free and easy running stitch in straight lines, often following the direction of seams. I quilt on my lap but I don’t use a hoop. I use 100% cotton quilting thread.

What type of sewing machine do you use?

It’s a second-hand Bernina Nova which was about 25 years old when I bought it, but unused. It’s basic, sturdy and brilliant.

Where do you buy your fabric/yarns/buttons?

When I write about my projects on yarnstorm, I usually make it very clear which pattern I am using and where I bought the materials. I also usually include details of the fabrics and yarns. So check in the relevant archive on the blog. But if you can’t find the answer please bear in mind that sometimes, for various reasons, I simply do not give the details.

Any tips for places to visit in London, Paris and New York?

Yes, masses. There’s a wealth of information in the archives of yarnstorm. Alternatively, look in the Resources section of The Gentle Art of Domesticity.

I’m sorry, but I do not give out recommendations for hotels or details of holiday accommodation (unless it’s a Landmark Trust property).
